Every patient has a story, but sometimes only part of it is spoken. As a health care professional, you must be attuned to everything in order to piece the entire story together. Whether it is evaluating a patient's symptoms, looking for clues in his environment or responding to his body language, an accurate patient assessment hinges on your skills as an investigator. That is why Advanced Medical Life Support (AMLS) training is important. AMLS is a two-day, 16-hour course for EMTs, paramedics, registered nurses and physicians who wish to advance their skills in dealing with medical emergencies. Students will explore diseases in great detail and enhance their understanding of why symptoms manifest. AMLS will improve a student's ability to:
A majority of the class time will be spent doing hands-on physical assessment of patients. Students will study airway management and pathophysiology. There will also be an in-depth examination of the assessment and treatment of hypoperfusion, dyspnea/respiratory failure, chest pain, altered mental status, seizures, acute abdominal pain and gastrointestinal bleeding. The course incorporates the new assessment of the EMT-Basic and Paramedic National Standard Curricula.
