Dan’s interest in EMS started during his childhood. His father was active in their local volunteer fire department and would take Dan along on calls. Following in his father’s footsteps, Dan become an EMT in college and a paramedic in graduate school. Dan has obtained a Master’s degree in Emergency Medical Service from Hahnemann University, now Drexel University, a Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Pittsburgh, and is currently pursuing his Doctorate in Public Health from the University of Pittsburgh. Dan previously worked for a member hospital, as the Director for UPMC Prehospital Care, for eight years and has now rejoined the CEM/STAT MedEvac team as the Vice President. In his current position, he provides support to Emed Health, Office of Education, Office of Research, STAT Com, and STAT MedEvac’s Business Relations and Development team. “The Center for Emergency Medicine is fortunate to have strong leaders and incredible teams in each of those areas, so most of my job is to make sure they have the resources they need to do their jobs well.”

While pursuing his Master’s degree in EMS, Dan stated that “I was constantly reading articles published by the Center for Emergency Medicine and dreaming with the other students about the impact we could have on EMS, if we had the same resources as the CEM. Here I am working with the people I’ve admired for a long time. It just doesn’t get any better than that. Working with the senior management team gives me an opportunity to learn from people who are passionate about their work, and incredibly dedicated to making the CEM successful. We are in the midst of incredible change at the Center for Emergency Medicine, and have an unprecedented opportunity to change how EMS both on the ground and in the air functions. To have a small role in the future of EMS is very rewarding to someone like me.”

In 2003, Dan received the Walter J. Thomas Award “in recognition of dedicated service and superior accomplishment in emergency medical services” by the Pennsylvania Emergency Health Services Council. Then, in 2005, Dan was awarded the Nancy Caroline Award. This award was presented to him again by the Pennsylvania Emergency Health Services Council, which honors “an emergency medical services and/or rescue service provider for their contribution to the development and implementation of quality injury and illness prevention programs(s) within their community.”

Outside of working and going to school, Dan spends time with his wife and kids. He has a seven year old daughter and a five year old son.
